Warner Bros. is deciding whether to employ a computer process to turn Louis Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans into a 3D film.  The tremendous success of Avatar is fueling increased interest in extra-dimensional filmmaking.  Even though Avatar was conceived as a 3D film and shot that way from the beginning, it is possible to create a 3D film from a 2D negative as Disney/Pixar has done with Nightmare Before Christmas and the first two Toy Story films (the third Toy Story is being shot in 3D from the start).

Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans is a remake to the Ray Harryhausen-produced 1981 film, which was based on myth of Perseus.  The new Clash of the Titans, which stars Avatar's Sam Worthington as Perseus, is slated to hit theaters on March 26th, which would make it the second major Q1 release based directly on Greek mythology.  Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which is an adaptation of the first of Rick Riordan’s Greek myth-based YA novels, debuts in theaters on February 12th.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the conversion to 3D could be accomplished in time for Clash of the Titans to make its March 26th release date.  If it is converted it will face competition for 3D-enabled screens from Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Pet Dragon, which opens the same weekend.

The first graphic novel based on the Percy Jackson series is due this fall, and First Second has two myth-based graphic novels due out this year, Zeus: King of the Gods in January and Athena: Grey-Eyed Goddess in April (see “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”).
