The Pee-Wee Herman Show will begin a six week run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway this October. The new show had a limited run in Los Angeles earlier this year (see “Pee-Wee Returns”).
It was a stage show that first brought Paul Rubens’ wildly crazed characters into the public eye in the early 80s. After a Tim Burton movie, five seasons of the TV show (and 22 Emmy Awards), and another feature, Pee-Wee was firmly ensconced in a generation’s consciousness.
Pee-Wee also moved a lot of merchandise in his day, including the famous Talking Pee-Wee dolls and many other toys and figures.
Many of the original characters were back in the show’s L.A. incarnation, including some played by the same talent. The show’s scenic designer, David Korins, worked with Gary Panter, who designed the original stage production and TV show.
