According to coverage by Scott Hettrick for Variety and Video Business, the Spider-Man video has broken all records for opening weekends in theaters or in stores by generating over $200 million in its release weekend. An estimated 11 million copies were sold over the three days from its Friday release through Sunday. Another 1.8 million copies were sold to rental stores, and rental revenue is counted in the $200 million figure.
About 75% of copies purchased were on DVD, a record high percentage. The 11 million copies sold represents about a 40% sell-through of the 26 million copies that were shipped to retailers -- a healthy percentage.
Another 14 million copies are being shipped to non-U.S. markets, meaning that a total of 40 million copies of this video have now been shipped to retailers, a staggering figure by any measure. Pop culture retailers had their own ways of using the event as a promotional springboard (see 'Pop Culture Stores Gear Up for Spider-Man DVD'), but even for retailers that didn't carry or promote the title, this incredible exposure for Marvel's flagship character can only be good.
