Reports indicate that Tom Cruise is in talks to star in We Mortals Are, a science fiction adventure film adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, a light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka that is published here by Viz Media.  Sakurazaka’s novel, which was nominated for the Japanese equivalent of a Nebula Award, follows the adventures of a recruit in the United Defense Forces who is attempting to defend the Earth from the mysterious Mimics, a potent force of alien invaders.

 

The protagonist of the story is caught in a time loop.  He is killed during his first sortie, but then wakes up on the day before his death and goes through the process again and again.  The recruit’s skills continue to improve with his experience in battle, but can he ever break out of the loop?

 

Heat Vision reports that Cruise is circling the project, which Doug Liman (Fair Game) is slated to direct for Warner Bros. from a screenplay by Dante Harper and Joby Harold.

 

Yoshitoshi Abe created the illustrations for Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill, which was published in Japan by Shueisha and by Viz under their Haikasoru imprint.
