Layoffs in the shutdown of LucasArts were only the beginning for Disney, which has cut staff at Industrial Light and Magic and is about to embark on a cost-cutting reduction in force at the movie studio and perhaps other divisions.
The ILM layoffs were in part a ripple effect from the LucasArts shutdown (see "Disney Shuts Down LucasArts"); the videogame studio was an internal client of the Lucasfilm visual effects house, according to Variety. The wind-up of the animated Clone Wars series (see "New Direction for 'Star Wars' Animation") eliminated another internal ILM client.
The studio and perhaps other divisions as well appear to also be slated for layoffs, according to multiple reports. The studio will be hardest hit, especially in home entertainment, production, and marketing, according to Variety. A review of the company’s structure to determine if resources are positioned for future growth has been ongoing since last year.
In addition to positions at the studio, a small number of people in animation and position cuts in consumer products, most from attrition, will also be targeted, according to Reuters.
