Legendary Entertainment and Universal Pictures have signed a five year deal that begins in 2014, replacing Legendary’s relationship with Warner Bros. (see "Warner Bros. in Disarray"), the companies announced Wednesday. The companies will co-finance Legendary films, and Universal will market and distribute them worldwide. Legendary properties will also be expanded into Universal theme parks, and Universal will collaborate with Legendary, which has a relationship with China Film Group, on projects in China.
Legendary "will continue to create and finance tent pole films based on intellectual property that is uniquely appealing to the coveted fanboy audience," the announcement said. Past Legendary films include the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, 300, Man of Steel, and Watchmen. It seems unlikely that Legendary will continue to make films based on Warner Bros. subsidiary DC Comics properties after the divorce.
