Incomplete details were leaked back in August, but now Disney Publishing has confirmed via the disneyandmore blog plans to release a 176-page graphic novel inspired by the Disneyland attraction Space Mountain. Space Mountain will be released on May 6, 2014 as the first of a planned trilogy.
Space Mountain will be written by Bryan Q. Miller (Batgirl, Teen Titans, Smallville: Season 11, Spiderman) and illustrated by Kelly Jones (Batman, The Sandman: Dream Country & Season of Mists) and Hi-Fi Design. The book will be available from Disney Press in both hardcover and paperback editions.
The story is set in the year 2125, described as "story of two kids, a miniature flying saucer and dangerous mission twenty-four hours into a twisted tomorrow." The young cadets are chosen to join a team of space explorers on a special field trip to journey 24 hours into the future. Of course, something goes wrong, and the kids must save the day and get back to Space Mountain before the universe is destroyed.
Disney plans to follow up Space Mountain with two other books: Return to Space Mountain in 2015, and Battle for Space Mountain in 2016. The Space Mountain indoor coaster opened in 1975 in Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World, and is currently the oldest operating roller coaster in Florida.
This is not the only comic book "based on rides" adaptation Disney has in the works. Earlier this month, Marvel Comics announced it would be debuting a comic book series in January called Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird (see "Marvel Announces 'Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird' Comic").
