Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed a new project on 60 Minutes Sunday night: delivery by drone. The Prime Air service would be for packages up to around 5 pounds (86% of the items Amazon ships are 5 pounds or under), and would be effective within around 10 miles of a distribution center. The service would allow Amazon to deliver to some customers within a half hour of when the customer ordered.
FAA rules governing domestic drone use aren’t going to be released until 2015, and Bezos says it will probably be beyond that before such a service is ready to deploy. But as the accompanying video demonstrates, Amazon has worked out a lot of the basic elements of the service already.
