Viz Media will release three Miyazaki volumes under the Ghibli Library imprint on April 8th: The Art of the Wind Rises, Hayao Miyazaki: Turning Point - 1997-2008 and a paperback of Hayao Miyazaki: Starting Point - 1979 to 1996.
The hardcover The Art of Wind Rises depicts the art from Miyazaki’s latest, and last, film release, which goes into wider release February 21st (see "'The Wind Rises' Trailer"). The book includes in-depth interviews with the filmmakers and behind-the-scenes art from conception to production. Authored by Miyazaki, the book is 224 pages, full color and has an MSRP of $34.99.
Hayao Miyazaki: Turning Point - 1997-2008 is the follow-up to Starting Point (see below), and chronicles the beloved animation director’s later career with another collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs. In the mid-1990s, Miyazaki found international success, and his films during this time, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, were internationally lauded, including an Academy Award win in 2003 for Spirited Away. The 400-page autobiography is translated by Beth Cary and Frederik L. Schodt, is black and white, and carries an MSRP of $29.99.
Hayao Miyazaki: Starting Point - 1979 to 1996 is a softcover edition of the book released to English audiences in 2009 (see "Starting Point: 1979-1996"). Starting Point, translated by Beth Cary and Frederik L. Schodt, covers Miyazaki’s first two decades as a filmmaker. The combination of essays, interviews, and memoirs goes back to the roots of Miyazaki’s childhood, how he formed his theories of animation, his years as a salaried animator, and the founding of Studio Ghibli. The 462-page paperback is black and white, with an MSRP of $16.99
Even with Miyazaki’s recent retirement (see "Miyazaki Is Retiring"), Studio Ghibli will carry on (see "Studio Ghibli to Adapt 'When Marnie Was There'”).
