Monte Cook Games has announced plans to release Numenera Character Options, a supplement for their Numenera RPG, in May.
The 96-page softcover guide is a new addition to the already planned line-up for the RPG, which funded a number of supplements as bonus rewards when it launched the game on Kickstarter last year (see "Monte Cook's New RPG at over $300K"). MCG followed that initial launch with a brick-and-mortar retailer push (see "'Numenera' B&M Promotion").
The core book has nearly sold through its initial printing, which MCG said was more than twice the quantity required to fulfill the Kickstarter. The print run demand from the Kickstarter can conservatively be estimated at 3,500 when counting backers who pledged for a physical (not PDF) copy of the book--meaning the print run must be at least 8,000, which has sold through in six months of release. No small feat for a new RPG.
"At this point we have moved far more books through retail than Kickstarter,” COO Charles Ryan confirmed. "The Kickstarter gave Numenera a great start, but nearly from launch, sales have been dominated by retail. Now we have a large reprint on the way, plus Numenera Character Options, none of which goes to Kickstarter backers. This is a really strong line for retail."
For other recent Numenera releases, see "'Numenera: The Devil's Spine'" and "'Numenera: The Ninth World Bestiary'."
