Alex de Campi is taking on Lady Zorro for Dynamite, and she’s promising the kind of story her fans like. "I’m going to bring to the Lady Zorro story many of the elements that fans love in my Grindhouse books--sexiness, violence, and impressively gory deaths--as well as my penchant for very original, exciting set-piece action sequences," she said. "Swords, corsets, cleavage, dismemberment. What’s not to like?"
The four-part mini-series will have art by Rey Villegas (The Bionic Man, Lady Rawhide), with covers by Joseph Michael Linsner (Dawn, Conan, Dark Ivory). A steampunk variant cover will be done by Sergio Fernandez Davila (Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure). A retailer variant for issue #1 will be done by Joseph Cooper (Baby’s First Deadpool Book, Bloodshot and H.A.R.D.CORPS). The book debuts July 16th.
Lady Zorro was created by Matt Wagner and John K Snyder III, and first appeared in Zorro Rides Again #10 in 2012. This will be de Campi ‘s (Smoke, Kat & Mouse, Grindhouse: Doors Open at Midnight) first work for Dynamite, and Dynamite CEO Nick Barrucci flagged the book in his recent interview with ICv2 (see "ICv2 Interview: Nick Barrucci, Part 2"). "I’ve been following (de Campi) since Smoke, and she’s a really smart writer with a distinctive voice whose work I respect," he said. "That we’re finally getting to work with her is really exciting."
"I’m thrilled to be able to take on Lady Zorro," de Campi said. "She’s such a clean slate, having only appeared in three issues of the main Zorro book, and as a kid who grew up devouring swashbuckling adventure stories, being able to have my own lady heroine with a sword is like a dream come true."
"For those that don’t know much about her, she’s a Spanish gal whose family was killed by soldiers and, burning with vengeance, she decides she will become... a fox (Zorro means "fox" in Spanish)," she continued. "Unlike the noble, never-kills-if-he-can-help-it Zorro, Lady Zorro is a bit more bloodthirsty. We’re joining her in exile up the coast of California, where she is cultivating roses... and forgiveness."
