Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures plan to move forward with a Godzilla sequel after the film grossed nearly $200 million at the global box office this weekend, according to Variety.
The King of Monsters reboot scored a solid win domestically with a $93.2 million opening (see "'Godzilla' Stomps Box Office Into Submission"), and banked $103 million overseas in 64 territories, and it hasn’t even opened in China or Japan (where die-hard Godzilla fans have already been complaining the Americanized monster is "too fat" or looks like "a giant iguana freaking out").
Jon Jashni, Legendary president and chief creative officer, is unconcerned with criticism, since "Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way." It looks like that gamble, which saw Legendary finance 75% of the $160 million film budget (Warner Bros. picking up the other 25%), has paid off.
This will obviously be a boon to the comic and book licensees: IDW Publishing, Legendary Comics, and Titan Books (see "'Godzilla: Cataclysm' Mini-Series" and "'Godzilla: The Art of Destruction'").
