This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Ghostbusters, and Sony Pictures announced a plan for a limited theatrical run of a restored and remastered cut of the film on August 29, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The theatrical release, set for more than 700 theaters, will be the center of a planned celebration that includes special events, collectible merchandise (see "Domo Meets 'Ghostbusters'" and "Diamond Select Toys Preview" for examples,) and a new home-entertainment release.

On September 16th, Sony will release a Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, as well as the Ghostbusters II 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray--which is the first Blu-ray edition of the 1989 sequel.  Special features on the Ghostbusters II Blu-ray will include new conversations with director Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, and deleted scenes.  There will also be a Collectible Limited Edition Gift Set (pictured here) with both movies on Blu-Ray, as well as an exclusive Slimer figurine, plus digibook with both films mastered in 4K for ultra HD TVs on Blu-Ray.

Will the 30th anniversary summer push bring news of the long gestating third Ghostbusters film (see "'LEGO Movie' Helmers May Direct 'Ghostbusters 3'")?
