San Diego Comic-Con News: Batman’s 75th Anniversary celebration is certainly multi-faceted, it even includes the first DVD and Blu-ray release of the 1966 Batman TV series, certainly the most popular vintage series that hasn’t been released on disc yet. At a special panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. unveiled the elaborate Batman: The Complete TV Series Limited Edition, which includes lots of images of colorful Bat villains rendered in 1960s appropriate day-glo colors, as well as two books, trading cards, and a toy Batmobile, plus tons of extras on the discs themselves including commentaries from Adam West and Burt Ward, screen tests, audition tapes, bumpers and promos.
Of course the most important part of the whole process is the high-def transfer of all 120 episodes of the 1960s Batman series. Reports from the SDCC panel indicate that the hi-def footage looks great--and it will have to, since the Blu-ray Limited Edition has a retail price of $270 (a DVD version is available for $199.70). The long-awaited Batman TV series will be released in November (see "Classic 'Batman' Home Video Date Announced").
The elaborate Batman: The Complete TV Series Limited Edition with its high price point and all its extras and fancy packaging is a throwback to the golden age of DVD releases. It will be released in a more affordable version in the future, but Warner Bros. is betting that lots of collectors feel they have already been waiting long enough.
