Battle Royale II-Requiem opened last weekend in Japan to huge ticket sales, according to Screen Daily.  BR2 topped the original Battle Royale's opening by over 64%, setting a record for its distributor, Toei.  It will be a strong contender for the largest domestic hit of the year in Japan, according to Toei.

The film picks up where the controversial original leaves off, pitting high school students on a deserted island against a rebel group led by a survivor of a previous Battle Royale in a near future Japan.  In the original, the government fights school violence by taking a randomly chosen group of high school students and placing them on a deserted island to fight it out to the death. The sequel was completed by the son of director Kinji Fukusaku after his death.

The manga based on the original is being released by Tokyopop in the U.S. (see 'Tokyopop's Battle Royale Manga').  No DVD release has been announced.
