David Goyer has been tapped by Syfy to develop a Superman prequel series that explores the roots of the Superman story in the way the Gotham series on Fox explores the roots of the Batman mythos, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The result will be Krypton, exploring the planet of Superman’s origin at a time when the House of El is in disrepute, and his grandfather is working to pull the planet back from disarray.
The script will be written by Ian Goldberg, a writer/producer of Once Upon a Time, from a concept by Goldberg and Goyer. Goyer wrote Man of Steel, so is very familiar with the character and the mythos.
Emulating the Gotham approach, which finesses many continuity hassles and provides a relatively clean canvas, is undoubtedly attractive for reasons beyond the storytelling benefits; Gotham has also been the most successful of the new DC series (see "Fox Opts for a Full Season of 'Gotham'").
