According to Variety, the Sci Fi Channel has ordered 20 hours of Stargate Atlantis, the new Stargate SG-1 spin-off series, including a 2-hour opening episode. The show has been in development for some time (see 'Stargate SG-1 Removal Sets Stage for Spin-off Series'). Atlantis is scheduled to launch next summer; it will initially be paired with SG-1. This should give Atlantis a strong send-off and help to maintain Stargate merchandise sales.
