Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have chosen Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon to write and direct a live action motion picture based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman, created by William Moulton Marston in 1941. 

In addition to Buffy, Whedon created the spin-off series Angel and wrote screenplays for Toy Story and Alien Resurrection as well as comic books for Dark Horse (Fray) and Marvel (Astonishing X-Men). 

Currently Whedon is finishing up production on his first major feature film directorial effort, Serenity, which is based on his short-lived TV series Firefly and is due out this fall.

Whedon, in part because of his successful run on Astonishing X-Men, was considered to be one of the frontrunners to direct the third X-Men film for Fox, but his acceptance of the Wonder Woman gig makes it look increasingly likely that the rumors, floating around this week to the effect that British director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) will direct X-3, are true.
