The Anime News Service is reporting that Kenji Kamiyama, director of Production I.G.'s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series, revealed that a third GIS: SAC project was in the works. Mr. Kamiyama received the award for Best Direction of a TV series at the Kobe Animation Festival, when he mentioned that a third project was underway, though he declined to say if it would be another season of the popular TV series, a movie version or an OVA.
The first DVD of the second series (or season), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2'nd Gig was just released in the U.S. this week. Although it does contain some of the original Ghost in the Shell's machine vs. man themes as well as a good deal of political intrigue GIS: SAC is basically the action-packed saga of a high-tech, super secret anti-terrorist squad and is much more accessible than the recent more philosophically-inclined feature film, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also one of the most popular anime series in the U.S., so the prospect of a third season (or whatever) is good news indeed.
