Dynamite Entertainment and the Davis-Anderson Merchandising Corp. have announced that Dynamite will publish a new ongoing comic book series featuring the Highlander. The new comic book series will include Highlander characters from both the film and the TV series, with the first story arc set during the time period following the events from the first Highlander movie. The original film from 1986, which featured Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, was a box office flop that became a cult film hit spawning a number of sequels, a 119-episode TV series, an animated series and 14 original Highlander novels. A new series of Highlander films featuring Adrian Paul (from the Highlander TV series) is currently in production.
So far Dynamite has not announced the creator team for the series, but the publisher has released a cover for the first book by Gabriel (Secret War) Dell' Otto and has also announced that a number of other top flight artists including John Cassaday, Billy Tan, Mel Rubi, Lee Moder, Will Conrad, and Guiseppe Camuncoli will also provide covers for the series. One wonders whether the Highlander motto, 'There can be only one,' will apply to the number of covers per issue of the Highlander comic?
Dynamite Entertainment, which is also publishing Red Sonja and Battlestar Galactica comics, is quickly becoming one of the leading comic publishers of licensed properties in the U.S. market.
