The animated feature based on Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis (see ''Persepolis' Animated Feature Underway'), the story of her childhood in modern Iran, was profiled in this week's Sunday New York Times, with interesting details of the making of the b/w film.

The first step in producing the movie was recording the voices.  Then Satrapi was recorded acting out each scene, in order to show the animators the movements she wanted.

Then the animation was produced in France, using hand-drawn images traced on paper.  The location for the animation was chosen to give Satrapi a daily hand in the production.

Sony Picture Classics will release the film in the U.S. this year.  The English soundtrack will feature Catherine Deneuve as Satrapi's mother (she also played the role in French), and Gena Rowlands as her grandmother.
