DC Entertainment will release Original Video Animations and shorts tied to its Batman Unlimited and DC Super Friends toy lines, in cooperation with its toy licensee Mattel (and Mattel subsidiary Fisher Price) and Warner Bros., according to Variety.  The animated content will provide backstory for the toys and serve as a way of introducing new characters, devices, and other toyetic concepts.

The plan for Batman Unlimited (a new brand for which the toys are currently launching) kicks off with Unlimited: Animal Instincts, a Warner Bros. OVA featuring Batman, Flash, Red Robin and Green Arrow vs. the Penguin and newly introduced cyber animals.  It will launch on DVD, Blu-ray, and HD Digital on May 12, followed by a sequel OVA later in 2015.

Warner Bros. will also produce 22 two-minute Batman Unlimited shorts, which will be distributed free on a variety of digital platforms.

The Batman Unlimited content will help launch new action figures and accessories, a new Batmobile, and the new CybeRex robot dinosaur.

Warners will also produce 15 three-minute shorts based on Super Friends, currently a Fisher-Price Imaginext toy line.  The shorts will be released this spring, along with an app.

The Super Friends content will introduce new toys including a Joker Laff Factory and a new Batcave, and books.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products will oversee the projects, working with DC Entertainment and Mattel and subsidiary Fisher Price.
