Cheapass Games has announced a new edition of its award-winning two-player fight game Brawl will release in January.

In the game, two players compete with different fighter  decks, with the goal of winning by playing more “Hit” cards on their side of the table than their opponent to win “Base” cards. “Block” cards can stop “Hits,” “Press” cards nullify “Blocks,” and “Clears” take the “Base” out of play.  “Freeze” cards stop the action at a “Base.” When all the “Bases” are frozen, play ends. The game takes less than a minute to play.

There are six different character decks available: Bennett, Chris, Darwin, Hale, Morgan, and Pearl. Multiple decks can be used for multiplayer variants, including Tag Team, or Round Robin.

The new edition was funded by a Kickstarter which raised $43,715 from 737 backers ($59.31/backer average) in a short 17 day campaign.

The new edition will use the original Ryan Kinnaird artwork, with only a few small tweaks to the deck recipes.  The new decks will be compatible with original decks. MSRP is $8.50/deck.

A Seniors expansion, which features six new fighter decks, was included as part of the Kickstarter, and may also  be released to trade in mid-2016, depending on sales of the core decks.

Designed by James Ernest in 1999, Brawl was nominated for two Origins Awards, and the expansion Brawl: Club Foglio won two Origins Awards in 2000 (see “2001 Origins Awards Winners”).  The Brawl: Catfight expansion was nominated for an Origins Award in 2001.
