CBS’s new DC Comics-based Supergirl series had strong preliminary ratings in both total viewers and the key young adult demographics.

The show benefited from following The Big Bang Theory, Variety reported, retaining 76% of the nerd-comedy’s young-adult audience. The Big Bang Theory led the night overall (4.2/14 in 18-49, 15.9 million viewers total), but Supergirl  was a strong #2 for the night, (3.2 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 12.9 million viewers total).

The numbers also make the Supergirl the best of the fall season, rating #1 in adults 18-49 (3.2), slightly better than NBC’s Blindspot (3.1).  The total viewer numbers (12.9 million) also put Supergirl  #1 in the fall premiere ratings measure, ahead of CBS’s Life in Pieces (11.3 million) and CB’s Blindspot (10.6 million).

CBS released a new trailer that gives a view of the full season, which will include encounters with  the Red Tornado, Reactron, and her evil aunt Astra.

DC Comics has a new version of Supergirl #1 on the shelves to tie in with the show (see “DC Rush-Solicits 'Essentials: Supergirl'”).
