CBS plans to bring Star Trek back via its streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Alex Kurtzman, the producer of the 2009 Star Trek movie reboot has been tapped as Executive Producer, along with Heather Kadin (Limitless). The new Star Trek TV series will be the first original series on CBS All Access, the digital platform of CBS. The premiere episode will be broadcast on the network in January 2017.

This new show will not be a reboot, but will instead introduce new characters “seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966,” according to the CBS announcement. President of CBS Television Studios David Stapf expressed confidence in Kurtzman's selection.  “We're excited to launch [Star Trek's] next chapter in the creative and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," he said.

Kurtzman is a prolific writer as well as a producer. In addition to writing the Star Trek movie reboot, he also wrote Star Trek Into Darkness, Transformers, and was one of the writers for Alias and Xena: Warrior Princess.

All the previous Star Trek series are also available on CBS All Access. The Star Trek movie franchise will continue for at least two more films. Star Trek: Beyond premieres July 22, 2016, and will be unrelated to the new TV series (see "First 'Star Trek Beyond' Image").
