Osprey Games has announced a new edition of the classic Escape From Colditz WWII prison escape game, releasing in October 2016 to celebrate the anniversary of the designer’s own escape from that notorious prison.
During World War II, the most difficult Allied prisoners of war would be transferred to the prison of Colditz Castle by their Nazi captors. Though it was meant to be "escape proof," a number of these POWs staged daring escapes. One of them was Captain Pat Reid (later a Major), who designed a game based on his experiences with the help of BBC writer Brian Degas. Originally published in 1973 by Gibson Games, Escape From Colditz was sold in the U.S. by Parker Brothers.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Captain Reid’s "home run," Osprey Games will release its new edition of the game, developed with the cooperation of Degas and featuring all-new artwork by Peter Dennis, who has contributed artwork to many Osprey book titles and a number of board games. The game will include wooden playing pieces and replicas of prisoner-of-war equipment from Degas’ own collection.
Despite the game’s 40-year age, it features a number of game mechanics common in more modern game designs, including "overlord" style play with one player controlling the prison guards while the others act as "escape officers" trying to find a way to break out of the castle and reach safety. Osprey has not announced if there will be any changes to the game design.
MSRP will be $65.00.
