A comic collection belonging to famed fantasy author Terry Brooks, worth between $100,000 and $500,000, was stolen from the law firm in Sterling, Illinois that was caring for it, according to reports on the SaukValley website.

Brooks was an attorney at Miller, Lancaster, & Walker (now Miller & Lancaster) before he wrote the bestselling Shannara series, and at some point he entrusted this comic collection to the law firm for safekeeping.

According to charges filed in Whiteside County Court last week, Trisha J. Clemens, who worked as a paralegal at the law firm, “knowingly obtained or exerted unauthorized control over ... numerous vintage comic books, having a total value exceeding $100,000 and not exceeding $500,000” sometime between the dates of Jan. 1, 2010, and Feb. 12, 2012.

This charge came out of an ongoing investigation of Clemens, who was charged last September with felony theft for misappropriations of funds between $100,000 and $500,000.  She was free on bond when the new charges were filed.

The comics, which were not identified individually, have not been recovered. One of Clemens’ bond conditions is that she can neither possess nor sell comics. A preliminary hearing for the new case has been set for May 2.
