Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen’s hit comic Empress has been optioned for a big screen adaptation, according to THR.
Millar, who is no stranger to Hollywood these days (see “'Supercrooks' & 'American Jesus' Optioned by Waypoint”), has partnered with producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum for this adaptation. The script will be written by F. Scott Frazier (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Collide).
Released under Marvel’s Icon imprint, the intergalactic space opera follows Emporia, the wife of a galactic dictator, who decides to take her three children and flee her husband with the aid of a bodyguard. They travel to her home planet, Earth. The twist is this all takes place 65 million years ago (see “Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen Reunite for 'Empress'” and “Preview: 'Empress' #1 (of 7)”).
“In terms of pure concept, this is the most ambitious story I’ve ever come up with, so it needed the most experienced producers I’ve ever been in business with,” said Millar. “Joe Roth is a genuine Hollywood legend and Jeff Kirschenbaum was part of the team that broke every record in the book at Universal last year. Even being on the same poster as these two guys is exciting to me.”
