MTV has begun development of Dark Horse Comics’ Freaks of the Heartland, according to Deadline.

Trevor, the protagonist of Freaks of the Heartland, seeks to protect his deformed younger brother Will, only to learn that his rural heartland community of Gristlewood Valley is full of “freak” children at risk from fearful adults. The six-issue miniseries was written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Greg Ruth. Niles is set to executive produce the MTV adaptation alongside Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg and the Gotham Group. David Gordon Green is attached to produce and direct, with Geoff Davey and Peter Sattler on writing duties.

The series development is tied to Dark Horse’s first look deal with Universal Cable Productions (see “Dark Horse Signs 'First Look' Deal With Universal Cable Productions”), the parent company of MTV and Syfy, which is also developing a series based on Dark Horse’s Harrow County (see “Syfy Developing 'Harrow County'”).
