Several high-profile anime films will be arriving in U.S. theaters this winter and we share details and trailers here.

VIZ Media and Toei Animation Inc. are partnering with Eleven Arts to present the U.S. premiere of Sailor Moon R: The Movie at more than 300 theaters across the country in late January.  The 1993 Japanese animated film was released on home video in the U.S. by Pioneer Entertainment.  The movie will be preceded by the Sailor Moon short Make Up! Sailor Guardians. Screenings will be offered in English dub or Japanese with English subtitles (check theaters for info).  When Mamoru (Tuxedo Mask) was young, he gave a rose to a lonely boy who helped him recover from the crash that killed his parents.  The boy has been searching the galaxy for a flower to give him back, but the flower he finds has devastating consequences on Earth.  Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians must stop the destruction before it’s too late.

FUNimation Entertainment is releasing the hit anime film Your Name in North America beginning with an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run at LA’s Laemmle Music Hall on December 2 – 8, Anime News Network is reporting.  The film, released this summer in Japan, is currently the seventh highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, and the fourth highest grossing anime in Japan behind Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke.  The film is currently projected to approach 20 billion yen ($200 million U.S.) Funimation will launch a broad theatrical release in the U.S. in Q1 2017.  The story revolves around a girl named Mitsuha, who lives in a rural town, and a boy named Taki who lives in central Tokyo.  Both are unsatisfied with their environment and place in life.  One night, they each have dreams of inhabiting the other’s body. Will they ever find out who their dream-person is?

Aniplex of America Inc will be releasing Sword Art Online the Movie – Ordinal Scale- in U.S. theaters nationwide after a March 1 premiere in Hollywood at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre.  Details on the theaters involved in the nationwide release will be announced at a later date.  The film will be distributed by Eleven Arts in Japanese with English subtitles.  Set in a near-future where virtual reality has become a fully-immersive experience, the movie takes place after the anime series’ second season.  After escaping the Sword Art Online game, Asuna begin playing a new game, Ordinal Scale (OS). However, monsters from the Sword Art Online game begin invading the new game.
