A new multi-million dollar miniatures game Kickstarter is threatening to usurp the top spot on ICv2’s Top Ten Tabletop Kickstarters chart, and it still has more than a month to go.
Elan Lee’s Exploding Kittens card game has been solidly on top of the chart since February 2015 (see “Top 10 Tabletop Game Kickstarters”). Now Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5, an updated and expanded version of the boutique horror miniatures game Kingdom Death: Monster is approaching $7 million in pledges.
Kingdom Death: Monster was funded via Kickstarter in January 2013, where it raised $2,049,721 from 5,410 backers ($378.88 / backer average), which gained it the #3 spot on ICv2’s first Top 10 chart (see “Top Ten Tabletop Game Kickstarters”). It was pushed off the chart in in mid-2015. The game was shipped in waves, with the most recent, wave 3, shipped in February 2016. The game was designed by Adam Poots, with art by Lokman Lam and Lorinda Tomko. The game did not have a trade release, and is now out of print.
Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 was launched by Kingdom Death on November 24. The campaign surpassed the original game Kickstarter in 2 hours, and currently sits at $6,986,491 pledged from 13,968 backers ($500.18 / backer average) with 31 days to go. That per-backer average is the highest ever seen in the chart, dwarfing category leaders like Reaper’s Bones miniatures campaigns and CMON’s Zombicide games (see “Top 10 Tabletop Game Kickstarters”).Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 is an updated and expanded version of the cooperative campaign-style horror miniatures game. Players take the role of survivors in a nightmare-horror world populated with bizarre creatures. As they battle their way through the game, they begin to build a fragile civilization in a world where humans are at the bottom of the food chain. The campaign lasts up to 30 “lantern” years (which each last 1 – 3 hours). The core game comes with a rulebook, showdown board, monster, gear, settlement, hunt cards, a hunt/settlement board, 110 tokens, 31 terrain tiles, monster controller panel, 4 gear grids, a character records pad (50 pages), a settlement record (50 pages) dice, 9 groups of core survivors, and 7 core monsters. The core game is available for a $250.00 pledge. Numerous expansions, “pin-up” miniatures, and promos are also available. There is a retailer level for 6 copies of the game for $1,200.00. Shipping is not included for any of the pledges. Miniatures are provided unassembled. The game is for players ages 17 and up due to adult content.
