The CW’s twisted take on the Archie Universe has added another franchise touchstone to Riverdale, with an updated version of the classic hit song “Sugar, Sugar” performed by Josie and the Pussycats in tomorrow’s episode.
The performance of the cover song will be part of the February 2 episode of Riverdale. The cover, performed by series star Ashleigh Murray (Josie) and her band, is a cover of the 2009 single “Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar) by Inner Circle featuring Flo Rida; which itself is based on The Archies’ 1969 song “Sugar Sugar,” recorded for the cartoon series The Archie Show. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and stayed there for four weeks.
The scene is set during a Riverdale football pep rally, with Josie and the Pussycats backing a choreographed performance by the River Vixen cheerleading squad.
The show premiered last week (see “'Riverdale' Cast Photos Go Noir”).
