The thriller Disturbia, an updated 'teenage' version of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, topped the weekend box office with an estimated total of $23 million. Disturbia stars Shia LaBeouf, the rising teen star who has graduated from a stint as the resident brat on Even Stevens to land a number of plumb roles in top films including Disturbia, Transformers (sure to be one of this summer's top releases), and Indiana Jones 4, which is slated to be released on May 22nd, 2008 (see 'Shia LeBeouf Rumored as Indy Jr.').
Meanwhile Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's 300 slipped to #9, earning an estimated $4.3 million and bringing its domestic cumulative to $200.8 million, making it the highest grossing March release ever. 300, which cost only $65 million, has also earned $204 million overseas; it is nearing the end of its astounding box office run.
Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse slipped 63.4% and finished in tenth place (one place below 300) and with a cumulative of just $19.7 million it looks like it will have a hard time topping the $30 million mark. The Weinstein Company has announced its intention to release the two features that make up Grindhouse separately, so this saga isn't over yet. One possible negative outcome of the decision to re-release the films separately could be a delay in the appearance of the Grindhouse DVD. In spite of the fact that the film has disappointed at the box office, it might have a chance to do very well on disk.
The TMNT move slipped to #15 and will probably finish around $55 million, having lost the battle for the youthful animation audience to Disney's Meet the Robinsons, which dropped only 27.6% and has already taken in $72 million. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie for Theaters, based on the Adult Swim series and targeted at an older teen/college age audience, opened in mediocre fashion in limited release bringing in an average of just $3,577 per venue at 877 theaters.
