Superbad, the raunchy teen comedy with a heart of geek-loving gold, easily topped the weekend box office with an estimated total of $31.2 million and a per-theater average of $10,583. With a budget of just $18 million Superbad, which was produced by comedy whiz Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40 Year-Old Virgin), has the distinction of being the lowest-cost film to top the box office so far in 2007.
Rush Hour 3 dropped 55.5% to $21.8 million, but still edged out The Bourne Ultimatum ($19 million) for second place, while The Simpsons Movie came in fourth with $6.7 million running its domestic cumulative to $165 million. The Invasion, a new remake of the 1957 cold war classic science fiction film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, earned just $6 million in spite of having the most star power of any film debuting this weekend with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
Although Matthew Vaughan's film of Neil Gaiman's Stardust had a very disappointing debut last weekend, it only dropped 42.8% while earning $5.2 million, which was good enough for sixth place and gives some indication that at the very least, Stardust has a chance to do very well and become a cult hit on DVD.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix fell to number 9, earning $3.5 million and bringing its total to more than $278 million -- it still has a chance to pass the $300 million mark. Meanwhile Transformers slipped to #14, but it has now earned $306 million and looks like it will reach the $315 million range. Pixar's Ratatouille finished at #16 earning $1.4 million. With a total of more than $196 million, it now appears likely that Ratatouille will hit the $200 million mark.
