Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it sold over 8.3 million copies of the Transformers DVD during its first week of release with 4.5 million DVDs sold on the first day.  Fueled by an effective advertising campaign the Transformers DVDs had the best week of any DVD released so far in 2007 and Michael Bay's robo-fest appears likely to take over the top spot currently held by Happy Feet, which has sold over 10 million discs.

Transformers has already passed the previous second place film, 300, which has sold well over 7 million DVDs since its release on July 31st.  300 is trailed by Night at the Museum and The Departed. 2007's top box office film, Spider-Man 3, which debuts on October 30th, is certainly likely to challenge for DVD supremacy in 2007 as will Shrek the Third, and the latest installments in the Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean series.

The Spider-Man 3 DVD should benefit from a Halloween-based promotion with Papa John's pizza that will provide customers with a larger pizza in a special Spidey 3 box for a special price that also includes a $3 off coupon for the Spider-Man 3 DVD.  In addition to Papa John's, Spidey has DVD promotions with Jolly Time Popcorn, Pringles and Nutella.
