Right Stuf/Nozomi Entertainment has acquired the rights to Rental Magica, a 24-episode anime series based on light novels by Makoto Sanda and illustrated by pako. It plans to release the series in two subtitled DVD box sets, with the first to be released this fall.
The DVDs will present the material so the series can be watched in either broadcast order, as it was shown on Japanese TV, or in chronological order, as the story was presented in the light novels.
Each box set will include a 100+ page book, originally packaged with the Japanese limited edition DVD releases, with background information about the series and the storyline.
The light novel series on which the anime is based has run over 14 volumes. It was originally serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s The Sneaker magazine, also the venue for the novels that inspired The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Trinity Blood, along with the novelization of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebelion.
The light novels also inspired a manga.
The anime was directed by Itsuro Kawaski (Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE: The Movie), series composition by Mamiko Ikeda (Emma: A Victorian Romance), and character design by Minako Shiba (.hack//SIGN, Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE).
