With X-Men Origins: Wolverine having amassed a worldwide box office take of nearly $357 million, there is little doubt that Fox will continue the X-Men franchise.  The question is what will be the next X-Men film?  Will it be the long-rumored Magneto movie with Ian McKellen, a Wolverine sequel featuring Hugh Jackman, or a Deadpool film starring Ryan Reynolds?  David Goyer, who is attached to write and direct Magneto, told Superhero Hype that, taking its cue from the success of Paramount’s Star Trek reboot, Fox may be going in an entirely different direction and may decide to make a “young X-Men” film based on X-Men: First Class, the comic book series that Marvel introduced in 2006.

Josh Schwartz, the creator of Gossip Girl, The O.C., and Chuck, has been hired by Fox to write a screenplay for X-Men: First Class with the idea that he would inject a “next-gen” sensibility to the X-Men property.  The X-Men First Class project would allow the studio to showcase a group of photogenic (and cheaper) young actors and actresses, and capture that "Star Fleet Academy" vibe (at the Xavier Institute), while still benefiting from the popularity of the X-Men franchise.
