Last year Marvel Studios released its Iron Man DVD in September and was rewarded by huge sales commensurate with the film’s number two status at the box office.  In 2009 Fox is releasing another Marvel-based superhero film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine on September 15th in hopes of jump starting the crucial Q4 DVD sales season.

 

Wolverine will be released in three editions, a single-disc version (MSRP $29.98), a 2-Disc Special Edition (MSRP $34.98), and a Blu-ray edition (MSRP $39.98).  The single-disc edition will include “Wolverine Unleashed: The Complete Origins” featurette.  The 2-Disc Special Edition also includes deleted and alternate scenes, plus two additional featurettes and a digital copy of the film.  The Blu-ray contains all of the aforementioned plus “Wolverine Weapon X Mutant Files,” “The Thrill of the Chase,” “On Set with Gavin Hood,” and “Fox Movie Channel Presents World Premiere.”

 

The only other summer blockbuster announced so far is Star Trek, which streets on DVD on November 17th.  Although only Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are sure to cross the $300 million barrier, there will a number of fall DVD releases, including Up, The Hangover,  and Monsters vs. Aliens, that have motored well past $200 million.
