It doesn’t appear that the leak of a workprint of the Wolverine movie on the net is having much of an effect on the sales of the film on DVD. The Wolvie discs got the all-important fall DVD season off to a strong start by selling more than 3 million copies in their first week of release. X-Men Origins: Wolverine made a clean sweep of the categories, topping the DVD sales chart, the DVD rental charts and the Blu-ray charts.
Industry analysts were especially heartened by Wolverine’s performance on Blu-ray where in its first week it sold the most units of any release so far in 2009. Around 25% of the Wolverine units sold were in the hi-def Blu-ray format. Wolverine is already Fox’s top-selling Blu-ray ever, and its strong performance is goading retailers to stock a higher percentage of BD discs for upcoming DVD releases such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which is due out on October 20th. The growing number of Blu-ray players, which was aided greatly by Sony’s lowering of the price of Play Station 3 by $100, appears to be having an effect on DVD sales as the new format finally appears to gaining a decent share of the home entertainment market.
