We caught up with Diamond VP-Purchasing Bill Schanes at San Diego long enough to hear that the market for most product categories was growing in the first half of 2002.  Fourteen of sixteen tracked categories at Diamond were up in the first half of 2002 vs. the same period a year ago, with graphic novels as the fastest growing category of all.  The two down categories were magazines, down around 2%, and toys, which although down 10% were 'on plan,' and suffering from unfavorable comparisons to especially good sales in the first half of 2001.    It's a good year in pop culture stores when the biggest complaints are about insufficient supply, and that seems to be the case this year.  With a war on and the stock market tanking, a little escape and relaxation is apparently balm for the soul.
