Fox has concluded negotiations with Matthew Vaughn and set June 3rd, 2011 as the date for the debut of the Vaughn-helmed X-Men: First Class film.  Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men films, was instrumental in getting Vaughn signed up to direct the new film.  Singer had been developing the X-Men: First Class property, but he chose to concentrate on directing Jack the Giant for Warner Bros. instead.  Singer, will however produce the new X-Men film, and insiders say he pushed hard to get Fox to agree to have Vaughn helm the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox really likes the latest version of the script for X-Men: First Class by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who worked on Marvel’s Thor movie.  The X-Men: First Class film is basically an origin film for the X-Men that goes all the way back to the days when Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were close friends working together with other Mutants to defeat the greatest evil in world history, but a rift developed that widened into the continuing conflict between Xavier’s X-Men and Magneto’s Brotherhood.

The summer of 2011 is already shaping up as a major cinematic battleground.  Marvel’s Thor kicks off the summer movie season on May 6th followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on May 20th, and the Hangover 2 and Mission Impossible 4 on Memorial Day (May 26-27).  X-Men: First Class will share its June 3rd weekend with Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom.  Two weeks later Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern opens on June 17th followed by Pixar’s Cars 2 on June 24th.  Transformers 3 opens on July 1st followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on July 15th, and The First Avenger: Captain America on July 21st and Cowboys and Aliens on July 29th.
