FUNimation will produce a direct-to-DVD anime feature based on Bioware’s Dragon Age videogame, the companies announced Monday.  The feature will be released to home video in 2011; production is starting now.

Production of original content is a new initiative for long-time anime distributor FUNimation; parent Navarre recently announced that the new strategy was a poor fit for its business and it’s selling FUNimation (see “FUNimation on the Block”).

The new anime will join other Dragon Age spinoffs, including a pen-and-paper RPG from Green Ronin (see “Dragon Age in Q1”) and a comic series from IDW (see “Electronic Arts Comics”).
