The New York Comic Con, which opens Friday, October 8th, features a wealth of programming of interest to educators, librarians, publishers, and retailers.  Among the key Friday sessions is “The Evolution of Graphic Novel Publishing: What Publishers Need to Consider In Order to Grow the Market,” a 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm discussion (in room 1A14) moderated by Diamond’s John Shableski with a panel that includes Barnes & Noble’s Jim Killen, Jill Faherty (Director of Library Services at Baker & Taylor), Heidi MacDonald of The Beat, Amanda Emmert from ComicsPro, John Hogan from GraphicNovelReporter.com, and publishing consultant and industry veteran Rich Johnson.

There will be lots panels for educators and librarians seeking to integrate comics and graphic novels into their courses of study or collections including “Rationalizing Comics and Sequential Art in the Classroom” (Friday, 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm, Room 1A15), “Extending Conversations About Graphic Novels,” (Friday, 4:15 pm to 5:15 pm, Room 1A15), “Graphic Novels as Young Adult Literature,” (Friday, 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm (Room 1A15), “Comics and Graphic Novels in the Secondary English/Language Arts Classroom,” (Saturday, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, Room 1A17), “Comics, Graphic Novels, & Manga for Kids,” (Saturday, 1 pm to 2 pm, Room 1A17), “Comics, Graphic Novels, & Manga for Teens,” (Saturday, 2 pm to 3 pm, Room 1A17), “Comics, Graphic Novels, & Manga for Adults,” (Saturday, 3pm to 4 pm Room 1A17), “Special Topics in Graphic Novel Librarianship: A Roundtable,” (Saturday, 4pm to 5pm Room 1A17), and “Good Comics for Kids: Building a Graphic Novel Collection for Young Readers,” (Sunday, 10:45 am to 11:30 am, Room 1A22).

There is not a lot programming for retailers, but what there is appears to be extremely useful.  Chris Powell of Lonestar Comics discusses “Am I Ready for Store #2 (or #3 or #4) on Friday from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm in Room 1A15, while on Saturday from 5 pm to 6 pm there will be a key discussion on “Comic Events That Really Work” (Room 1A17).  On Sunday from 1:15 pm to 2:15 pm in Room 1A17 Lisa VonDrasek from Bank Street leads a discussion about creating more business by developing “Community Partnerships,” and Mark Nichols tackles the important topic, “How to Expand Beyond the Traditional Comic Store Demographic” in room 1A17 from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
