DC Comics has announced that it will publish five one-shot prequel comics that tie-in to Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern movie, which debuts on June 17th. The prequels provide a jumping on place for those who are unfamiliar with the Green Lantern universe, explaining how Hal Jordan, Sinestro, Kilowog, Abin Sur, and Tomar all became who they are at the point at which the film begins.

According to DC’s The Source blog all five books will feature movie art covers and be available via a simultaneous day-and-date release in comic book shops and via DC’s digital comics app for $2.99.

The books will be written by the same creative team that forged the narrative for the Green Lantern movie. Geoff Johns and Michael Goldenberg are writing Green Lantern Prequel Special: Sinestro #1 (art by Fernando Dagnino), while Peter J. Tomasi and Adam Schlagman are scripting Green Lantern Prequel Special: Kilowog #1 (art by Joe Bennett & Fabrizio Fiorentino. Michael Green is writing Green Lantern Prequel Special: Abin Sur #1 (art by Karl Kerschl), while Marc Guggenheim is scripting Green Lantern Prequel Special: Tomar-Re#1 (with art by Cliff Richards), and Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Donald DeLine are penning Green Lantern Prequel Special: Hal Jordan #1, which features art by the great veteran Jerry Ordway.

Berlanti, Green, Guggenheim, and Goldenberg all worked on the screenplay for the Green Lantern movie under the watchful eyes of DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns, while Tomasi and Schlagman have written numerous Green Lantern titles for DC.
