Lionsgate is in final negotiations to acquire the rights to distribute the long-delayed horror film The Cabin in the Woods from MGM. As Deadline points out, The Cabin in the Woods has a distinguished pedigree. It was co-written by Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) and its cast includes Chris Hemsworth, who has since found fame as the eponymous hero of Marvel Studios’ Thor.

The Cabin in the Woods was originally slated to be released in October of 2009, but then MGM pulled it back in order to convert the film to 3-D. Unfortunately at that moment MGM slipped into financial incontinence and The Cabin in the Woods has remained on the shelf pending the solution of MGM’s myriad financial problems. Now that MGM has fully emerged from bankruptcy (see “MGM’s Pre-Packaged Bankruptcy Approved”), The Cabin in the Woods is one of the final projects to escape from bankruptcy-induced limbo.

Look for Lionsgate to release The Cabin in the Woods in October to take advantage of Halloween. Dark Horse was originally supposed to publish a Cabin in the Woods comic.
