Ted Yee of Comic Land in Coquitlam (British Columbia), Canada shares his Free Comic Book Day and Magic: The Gathering--New Phyrexia pre-release events.
Free Comic Book Day went pretty well. Lots of people were waiting at the door when we opened. We blew through tons of free comics and had a sale at the same time. A number of customers were impressed with the quality of the titles being offered this year. Hopefully things go this well again next year.
Our pre-release for New Phyrexia went well given that we ran on Sunday and thus up against Mother's Day. 24 players showed up plus an additional half-dozen for Open Dueling. Not bad considering we top out at seating 24 comfortably (and more if we squish). Players really liked the set, preorders are up 50% over Besieged and Scars. There was lots of hype around the new set, even with the early spoilers. Everyone had a lot of fun. I still would have rather avoided Mother's Day and FCBD but there's always going to be some reason not to run on this weekend or that weekend. The numbers were excellent so I can't really complain.
