New York Comic Con News—IDW Publishing has announced the spring 2012 publication of Nevsky, a 110-page, full color graphic novel adaptation of Sergei Eisenstein’s classic 1938 film Alexander Nevsky.  Ben McCool (Memoir, Pigs) has written the adaptation with art by Mario Guevara (Solomon Kane, Victorian Undead).

Alexander Nevsky is perhaps the most popular figure in Russian history.  In 1242 Nevsky preserved the Russian nation by defeating the invading Teutonic Knights in an amazing winter battle on the frozen Lake Peipus.  The famous “Battle on the Ice” sequence from Eisenstein’s film is one of the most innovative action sequences in the history of film—and the film’s costume design for the Teutonic Knights is also justly celebrated, and should provide the perfect sort of visual inspiration for the Nevsky graphic novel.

IDW has acquired the right to create the Nevsky graphic novel from Mosfilm, which produced the Eisenstein film, and Russ Film Properties.
