Image Comics has announced Lazarus, a new, creator-owned series by the Eisner Award-winning team of author Greg Rucka (Punisher, White Out, Queen & Country, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman) and illustrator Michael Lark (Winter Soldier, Daredevil, Captain America). Unveiled at Comic-Con last year (see “Image Comics Announces New Projects”), Lazarus premieres on June 26.
Lazarus maintains Image Comics' recent and strong foray into the science fiction genre, following titles such as Prophet, Manhattan Projects, and Storm Dogs. Cast in a future dystopian United States where society has embraced a feudal authority and the divisions between wealthy elite families, vassals, and serfs are brazenly stark, Lazarus is the story of individual protectors called the Lazarus who defend the feudal lords and their family interests. Centering on a young female protagonist known as Forever who serves the influential and prominent Carlyle Family, Lazarus #1 is not only the tale of her death, but also the revelation surrounding her origins and allegiance to the system.
Previously, Rucka and Lark worked together on Gotham Central. Joining the team is colorist Santi Argas, who did colors for Rucka on Checkmate. Along with the ongoing, second volume Stumptown from Oni Press in 2012, Lazarus represents the next stage in Rucka's move away from work for hire assignments in favor of creator-owned projects (see "More Creator Discontent: Greg Rucka Slams the Big 2").
