Comic-Con News: In its fourth SDCC announcement of the day Dynamite Entertainment revealed that N.Y. Times bestselling genre author Tony Lee (Doctor Who, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Superboy) will pen a new four-issue miniseries that will examine the origins of the fan-favorite character Starbuck, who was played memorably by Dirk Benedict in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series that debuted in 1978.
Starbuck was a likeable rogue whose origins remain wrapped in mystery. How did he acquire the devil-may-care attitude that provided so much on his on-screen charisma? Relatively little is known about Starbuck’s origins save for the fact that he was an amnesiac child, who lost his memory and most likely his family in a Cylon attack on Umbra. With his ample science fiction credentials, Lee plans to flesh out Starbuck’s background in this series.
The announcement of the Starbuck miniseries follows the successful rebooting of Dynamite’s flagship Battlestar Galactica title earlier this year by the team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, the creative team responsible for the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series that inspired the Marvel Studios upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film.
