Comic-Con News: IDW Publishing has had great luck with its oversize, black-and-white Artist Editions, and at Comic-Con the publisher has so far announced three new Artist Editions that will celebrate Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, Sam Kieth’s The Maxx, and Walt Simonson’s Starslammers graphic novel.
The Mike Mignola Artist Edition, which is due out in 2014, will collect the artist’s Hellboy in Hell, the five-issue miniseries from this year along with some short stories that Mignola crafted over the past few years and two early issues of Hellboy that should provide a useful contrast with the artist’s recent work so readers can see how Mignola’s treatment of the character has evolved over the years. Mignola’s Hellboy work will be seen without lettering, since the artist always puts that in last.
Also due in 2014 will be an Artist Edition of Sam Kieth’s The Maxx, which will collect the first six issues of the Image Comics series that debuted in 1993.
IDW has already published an Artist Edition of Walt Simonson’s Thor, which will get a second printing next year, but IDW also plans on publishing an Artist Edition of Simonson’s 1983 graphic novel Starslammers.
